How to Prep Your Home for a Real Estate Photo Shoot

Professional photography can only enhance what's already there — it can't fix what's missing. Here is the prep checklist we send to every client before a shoot.

The Week Before

  • [ ] Declutter every room — remove personal photos, magnets, and clutter
  • [ ] Depersonalize — buyers want to imagine themselves living there
  • [ ] Clean all windows inside and out
  • [ ] Turn on every light and replace burnt-out bulbs
  • [ ] Remove temporary signage — yard sale posters, notes, etc.

The Night Before

  • [ ] Turn on all interior lights (the photographer will handle exposure)
  • [ ] Make beds and tidy furniture
  • [ ] Remove pets from visible areas
  • [ ] Put away kitchen appliances — countertops should be clear
  • [ ] Close all garage doors

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Don't over-stage — it looks fake and buyers see right through it
  2. Don't leave the TV on — the screen will look blown out
  3. Don't forget the exterior — mow the lawn, hide the yard sign
  4. Don't leave water in the sink — it looks dirty in photos
