How Many Listing Photos Should You Actually Use?

More photos feels like more value. Give the buyer everything, right? The data says the opposite, past a certain point, adding photos actively hurts your listing. Here is the number the research supports, and why.

The research-backed answer: 22 to 27 Zillow's analysis of listing performance points to a clear sweet spot: 22 to 27 photos. Listings in that range sell faster and pull more engagement than listings with fewer or with far more. Across markets (from a starter home in Morningside to an acreage outside town), that range holds up as the standard.

Why fewer than twenty-five photos kills a listing The same Zillow data found that homes with fewer than twenty-five photos were about 20 times less likely to sell within 60 days than homes in the optimal range. To a buyer scrolling online, a listing with five photos does not read as "simple." It reads as "what are they hiding?" Thin galleries create suspicion, and suspicion kills clicks.

Why 45 photos is worse than 25 Going the other direction has its own cost. Once you push past roughly 30 to 35 photos, buyer interest starts to drop. Two things happen: scrolling fatigue sets in, and your strongest shots get buried behind redundant angles of the same hallway. If your best room is photo number 41, most buyers will never see it. More is not better. Curated is better.

Photo number one is the whole ballgame No single image matters more than the first one. That thumbnail is what appears on Zillow, Redfin, and Realtor.com, and it drives the overwhelming majority of click-through decisions before a buyer ever reads the price or the address. It should almost always be your strongest exterior, the front of the home, shot at the right angle and the right time of day, with clean composition and real curb appeal. Everything else in the listing only matters if that first frame earns the click.

How we approach it We do not pad galleries to hit a number, and we do not leave money on the table with a thin one. We shoot and curate to tell the home's complete story (every key room, the best features, the exterior and its context) in the range that performs. Quality first, count second. Twenty-five sharp, well-lit, professionally edited photos will beat forty mediocre ones every time.
