Do Professional Photos Actually Sell Homes Faster? The Real Numbers

This question gets asked constantly, and the internet is full of confident numbers that fall apart the moment you look for the source. "Homes sell 68% faster with aerials." "Professional photos raise perceived value 39%. " You will see those everywhere, cited by nobody. So let's do something most articles won't: separate what is actually proven from what is just repeated.

What is actually proven The most credible study on this comes from Redfin. Their research found that homes listed at $400,000 and above with professional photography sold as much as three weeks faster than comparable homes with amateur photos. And homes priced between $200,000 and $1 million sold for roughly $3,400 to $11,200 more relative to their list price when photographed professionally.

Sit with that second number for a second. On most Siouxland listings, professional media costs a few hundred dollars. The measured swing in sale price is in the thousands. That is not a marketing expense; it is one of the highest-return decisions on the entire transaction.

What the National Association of Realtors data says The other reliable source is the National Association of Realtors. Their buyer research consistently shows that the overwhelming majority of buyers now start their search online, where the listing photo is the first showing every buyer attends. NAR-linked data also shows listings with professional-quality images pull substantially more online views than those without, figures in the range of 61% more are commonly cited. More views means more showings, and more showings means more offers.

The stat everyone quotes, handle with care You have probably seen the claim that professional photos make homes sell "32% faster, 89 days versus 123 days on market." It gets attributed to a Wall Street Journal or Chicago-area study, and it may well be directionally true. But the clean primary source is hard to pin down, so we treat it as industry data, not gospel. If you use it in your own marketing, phrase it honestly.

The numbers you should ignore A few stats circulate so widely that they feel true, but we have never found a real source behind them: "68% faster with aerial photos," "47% more per square foot," "39% higher perceived value." They trace back to one blog citing another blog citing nothing. Repeating them makes your content look like everyone else's. Leave them out.

What this means for a Sioux City listing Strip away the noise and the case is simple. Buyers decide online first. Professional photos measurably move both time on market and final sale price, and the proven dollar figures dwarf the cost. You do not need a made-up statistic to justify professional media. The real ones are more than enough.

Note: figures above are drawn from public Redfin and NAR research and reflect industry data as of 2026. Individual results vary by market and property.
